Through international artists’ exchanges, Matrix Art Projects aims to support and facilitate dialogue and the sharing of ideas. We seek to encourage open and meaningful communication.
MAP LIVE 2007 was a performance art exchange between Tel Aviv and Carlisle, and between Dubrovnik and Carlisle.
From April 26th to 29th three artists from Israel and three from Croatia participated in a programme of live art performances with six artists from the UK in Carlisle, Cumbria. The performances took place in the Tullie House Gallery during the day and in the Source Cafe in the evenings.
After the performance events in Carlisle, seven of the artists - two from Israel, two from Croatia and five based in the UK participated in the 5-day residency at Allenheads Contemporary Arts. It was here that much of the dialogue and sharing of ideas and ideologies took place in preparation for the UK artists' visit to Israel and Croatia.
The visit to Israel was from 30th August to 8th September for the ZAZ festival. This included many more artists from Israel as well as from Poland, Serbia and Ireland, and two of the Croatian artists who came to Carlisle.
ZAZ toured around Israel, starting in Performance Art Platform, Tel Aviv and continuing in various venues in Jerusalem including the Underground Prisoners' Museum, the LAB and the Nachlaot Neighbourhood, and finished in the ADAMA hangar, Mitzpe Ramon in the Negev Desert. Altogether there were 33 artists participating and touring with this festival that was the first of its kind in Israel and had been organised and curated by Yaron David in response to the MAP LIVE 07 performance art exchange.
All participating artists made work in at least two of the venues - some many more. Some artists toured a finished show, whilst others made new work for, and often in response to, the different venues.
The visit to Dubrovnik, Croatia was from 26th September to 2nd October and performances were hosted by Art Radionica Lazereti. This building is next to the beach just outside the old city walls. The programme here was the UK and Croatian artists only. There was plenty of time during the visit to engage with the local people, and again some artists made more than one performance, both in the streets as well as the venue itself.
