The banners project was designed to involve community groups in the
making of a series of printed banners to display at the arts and heritage
festival at Harrington Marina. The collection would then remain the
property of the people of Harrington and be used for displays at future
events.
The idea was to produce work which would help those involved and those
attending the celebration day to visualise some of the possibilities
of making both temporary and permanent artwork to display at the marina.
This completed the third phase of the arts programme and was intended
to extend the work we had been doing which was mostly with children
in schools.
The first phase was designed to enthuse people about the possibilities
of making artwork, the second phase was to display the results of that
work to the wider community and the banners project would take the work
into the public realm through outdoor displays.
The project so far had mostly involved local school children in the
making of artwork which after being displayed at the marina returned
to be placed permanently in the schools. The banners project was a way
of extending the banner making workshkops with the Harrington History
Group last year by working with more community groups and specifically
groups with a mixture of adults and children.
